I've never been a massive meat-eater but, like most people I know, I'm trying to eat a bit less meat that I did these day. But for a treat on my husband's birthday we went to Smokestak for a boozy, meaty lunch. It's been on my hitlist for ages and it didn't disappoint.
My fave dish was the ox cheek cubes - delicious! The "bone marrow flatbread" was actually "bone marrow, flatbread" - small comma, big difference as bread came next to the marrow, rather than being made with it. There's not many things I don't like, but it was just a bit too slimy.
The aubergine made up for - smothered in miso, peanut and (unadvertised) feta. And the signature dish, brisket bun with pickled chili, was fantastic - buttery and a bit fatty but with the chili to cut through it all.
We went for cocktails instead of pudding and then legged it to pick the kids up.
It was a bizarrely hot September afternoon so we made full use of the outside benches, but I can't wait to come back in winter and sink a few red wines in the smokey inside.
